A clean Mk2 Focus ST225 still gets attention for the right reasons. That five-cylinder warble, the broad mid-range shove and a chassis that will cover a B-road properly make it one of the best-value modern Fast Fords. This Focus ST225 buying guide is about finding one that has been maintained and modified with care, not simply bought because it has a loud exhaust and a low asking price.
Focus ST225 buying guide: start with the right car
The ST225 was sold from 2005 to 2010 and uses Ford's 2.5-litre, turbocharged five-cylinder engine, shared in basic form with contemporary Volvo performance models. Factory output is 225 PS, sent through a six-speed manual gearbox. It is a properly usable hot hatch, with room for mates, luggage and a decent-sized aftermarket behind it.
There are standard ST-1 and plusher ST-2 specifications. ST-2 cars are usually more desirable thanks to their half-leather Recaro seats, heated front screen and extra equipment, but condition matters far more than trim level. A well-kept ST-1 with a full history is a better buy than a tired ST-2 with shiny paintwork and no evidence of major servicing.
Three-door and five-door cars drive much the same. The three-door has the cleaner profile, while the five-door is easier to live with if it is doing school runs, track-day trips or regular motorway miles. Standard cars are increasingly scarce, but sensible upgrades should not put you off. The key is whether the parts, mapping and maintenance all make sense together.
Bodywork and chassis checks
Do not let the engine be the only thing you inspect. Mk2 Focus shell condition can make or break the deal, particularly on cars that have seen 15-plus British winters.
Start around the rear arches, inner arch lips, sills and jacking points. Check beneath side skirts if fitted, as cosmetic additions can hide poor repairs or bubbling paint. Examine the bottom edges of the doors, tailgate, bonnet leading edge and around the windscreen. Surface corrosion is one thing; flaky seams, badly matched paint and fresh underseal applied only to problem areas are another.
Get underneath the car if possible. The rear subframe, suspension arms, brake pipes and mounting points deserve a proper look. Corroded rear suspension components are common enough and usually repairable, but use them to negotiate rather than pretending they do not exist. Look for oil contamination around the engine and gearbox, and inspect the condition of the exhaust from turbo-back rather than judging it by the tailpipe alone.
A lowered ST225 needs extra scrutiny. Quality springs and dampers from Bilstein, Eibach or similar can sharpen the car considerably, but bargain coilovers often leave it crashing, wandering and chewing through tyres. Uneven front tyre wear can point to tired lower arms, top mounts, track rod ends or an alignment that has never been corrected after suspension work.
Wheel condition is also a useful clue. Kerbed alloys happen, but four damaged wheels, mismatched tyres and budget rubber suggest the owner has economised elsewhere. These cars respond well to decent tyres, so a good matched set from a recognised manufacturer is worth more than a set of oversized aftermarket wheels.
Engine, turbo and transmission
The five-cylinder engine is generally strong when serviced properly. It does not, however, forgive neglected oil changes, poor mapping or repeated full-boost runs when cold. Ask for evidence of regular oil and filter changes, correct coolant maintenance and timing belt replacement. The timing belt interval should be verified against the car's age, mileage and service documentation, not guessed from what the seller says over the phone. A belt, tensioner and water pump job with an invoice is a major positive.
On start-up, listen for excessive rattles, smoke or an uneven idle. A brief bit of condensation from the exhaust on a cold morning is normal. Persistent blue smoke, especially after idling or on boost, can indicate turbo wear or engine issues. White smoke with coolant loss needs investigating before any money changes hands.
Check the coolant level and condition, then look around hoses, the expansion tank and thermostat housing for staining or leaks. Split boost hoses, tired clips and leaking intercooler joints can cause hesitation, reduced boost or a car that feels flat at the top end. They are not automatically expensive faults, but they show why a proper test drive matters.
The standard K04 turbo should pull hard and progressively once boost arrives. A healthy car feels eager through the middle of the rev range without surging, misfiring or dropping into limp mode. If it has an aftermarket dump valve, intake or loud induction kit, do not confuse extra noise with extra performance.
The six-speed M66 gearbox is tough, but test it when cold and fully warm. It should select each gear cleanly, including reverse, without crunching or excessive resistance. A heavy clutch pedal, slip under full throttle in a high gear, clutch judder or drivetrain clonk can mean a clutch and dual-mass flywheel bill is approaching. Engine mounts, especially the lower torque mount, commonly soften with age and can make the car feel less tidy on and off the throttle.
Test-drive it like an owner would
A five-minute lap around an industrial estate will not tell you enough. Let the car reach temperature, then use a mixture of town driving, open-road acceleration and a rougher section of road if possible.
The steering should be direct and the front end should turn in without vague delays. Expect some torque steer when you use full boost in lower gears, particularly on uneven surfaces, but it should not drag violently across the road. Knocks over potholes often come from worn drop links, bushes, top mounts or lower arms. None are unusual jobs on an older performance Ford, but several noises together soon turn a cheap car into a catch-up project.
Test the brakes from speed where safe. The original setup is adequate for normal road use, although many cars have upgraded discs, pads, braided lines or larger front brakes. A useful upgrade is not a substitute for maintenance. Feel for vibration, pulling, a soft pedal and seized rear calipers, then inspect disc condition through the wheels.
Check every electrical item too. Heated screen elements, air conditioning, central locking, electric mirrors, window regulators, dashboard functions and stereo controls can all become bargaining points. Water ingress from blocked drains or poor windscreen replacement can create electrical annoyances that are tedious to trace.
Modified ST225s: buy the package, not the power claim
Most surviving ST225s have been modified. That is not bad news. In fact, a sensibly built stage two car with supporting hardware can be more enjoyable and better protected than one running an aggressive generic remap on tired standard parts.
For a basic remap, look for a known tuner and proof of a suitable calibration. Once power rises, an uprated intercooler, freer-flowing exhaust, correctly sized intake pipework and sound boost hoses become sensible supporting parts. A 70mm core intercooler, cold air induction system and big boost pipe kit are familiar upgrades for good reason: they help reduce heat soak and keep the boost system reliable when the car is used hard.
Ask exactly who mapped it, what hardware was fitted, whether it has been dyno tested and if there are receipts. “Stage three” means nothing by itself. A car advertised with big figures but no injector, fuel pump, intercooler, clutch or engine-build information deserves caution. Likewise, avoid assuming a pops-and-bangs map is harmless just because it is common on social media. Excessive overrun fuel can be hard on catalytic converters and turbos.
Suspension, brakes and tyres should match the engine output. A mapped ST225 on worn bushes and cheap tyres is not a performance bargain. It is simply a standard chassis being asked to deal with more torque than it should.
History, mileage and what to pay for
Mileage alone should not scare you. A 130,000-mile car with invoices, regular servicing, a documented timing belt job and quality replacement parts can be a safer purchase than an 80,000-mile example that has spent years being lightly used and heavily modified. MOT history is useful for spotting recurring corrosion, tyre advisories and brake issues, but it should support a physical inspection rather than replace one.
Pay more for an honest car with a thick file, original keys, standard parts included and modifications from recognised manufacturers. Original paint, straight bodywork and an interior that has not been drilled, dyed or abused are becoming more valuable as clean examples thin out.
