Bilstein is not the cheapest route to a lower or firmer Fast Ford. That is exactly the point. Most of its popular kits are built around damper control first, rather than simply making the car sit on the floor. Pick the right range for the way you use your Ford and the result is usually a more tied-down, confidence-inspiring car without turning every pothole into a personal insult.
What Bilstein suspension changes on the road
The main difference is how the car controls the spring. A damper does not hold the vehicle up - that is the spring’s job. It controls the speed at which the suspension compresses and rebounds. When the original shocks are weak, or when a lowered car runs dampers not designed for shorter springs, the tyre can lose contact with the road over rough surfaces. More spring rate alone will not fix that.

If your Fiesta ST, Focus RS or Escort Cosworth has Eibach, H&R or similar springs fitted, B8 is the appropriate Bilstein pairing where an application is available. The shorter body and matched operating range help prevent the damper from sitting too far into its travel at rest.
This is where many lowered builds go wrong. Springs are fitted for a better stance, but the old standard dampers remain. The result can be bouncy rebound, repeated bottoming-out and a car that feels nervous on rough surfaces. B8 dampers do not remove the compromises of a very low ride height, but they give a moderate drop the support it needs.

Bilstein B14 and B16: coilovers for drivers who will set them up

For a show car that rarely sees rough roads, B14 coilovers offer the stance flexibility many owners want. For a daily that carries passengers, crosses potholed routes and needs to clear speed humps, a sensible spring and damper combination is often the better build.
